Cirkus: Shetty’s Star-Studded Comedy Misses the Mark

Stars can’t save stale gags. That’s the unfortunate takeaway from Cirkus, Rohit Shetty’s much-anticipated comedy extravaganza headlined by Ranveer Singh. Despite assembling an enviable ensemble including Pooja Hedge, Jacqueline Fernandez, Varun Sharma, Sanjay Mishra, and Johnny Lever, Cirkus’ recycled plot and uninspired humour make for a joyless slog, proving that even the most bankable of names can’t rescue a subpar script.

The Premise

Cirkus follows Roy and Joy, a pair of orphaned identical twins separated at birth, played by Ranveer Singh. Unaware of each other’s existence, the brothers are adopted by circus owners – one electricity-powered and the other battery-powered. Predictable hijinks ensue when grown-up Roy and Joy unknowingly end up in the same town, leading to a classic case of mistaken identities.

While the basic plot is reminiscent of Shetty’s earlier Golmaal series and borrowed heavily from the 1982 comedy classic Angoor, the movie Cirkus fails to infuse novelty or freshness into the well-worn premise. The script relies heavily on tired tropes and rehashed gags, rarely eliciting genuine laughs.

Ranveer’s Double Act

The ever-energetic Ranveer Singh gamely throws himself into the dual roles of Roy and Joy, but even his manic charm can’t salvage the lacklustre material. Ranveer’s efforts to differentiate the two characters through contrasting body language and accents feel laboured rather than effortless. His usually infectious energy feels misplaced and over-the-top here, unable to lift the film’s sagging momentum.

The Supporting Players

The Cirkus movie boasts an impressive supporting cast, but they are let down by the script’s paucity of well-written characters or memorable lines. Seasoned comedians like Sanjay Mishra, Johnny Lever, and Siddhartha Jadhav sleepwalk through their roles, saddled with cringe-worthy puns and slapstick gags. Pooja Hegde and Jacqueline Fernandez, playing the love interests, are reduced to mere glamorous props with little agency or impact on the plot.

Varun Sharma, playing a double role as Roy and Joy’s respective sidekicks, tries his best to land the comedic punches, but is weighed down by the uninspired writing. Talented actors like Murali Sharma, Mukesh Tiwari and Vrajesh Hirjee are completely wasted in thankless, unfunny parts.

Technical Aspects

On the technical front, the Cirkus movie is a mixed bag. Jomon T. John’s cinematography lends a colourful, carnivalesque vibe to the proceedings, but the visual flair can’t compensate for the lack of substance. The editing feels choppy and inconsistent, with some scenes and gags overstaying their welcome. The background score is loud and overbearing, often distracting from the performances.

The sets and costumes are lavish and eye-catching, trying to recreate the retro charm of the 1960s. But the period detailing feels more like a cosmetic distraction than an organic part of the narrative.

Did you know?

Cirkus is Rohit Shetty’s 15th film as a director and his 4th collaboration with Ranveer Singh after Simmba and the Sooryavanshi cameo.

The film features over 40 supporting characters, with actors like Sanjay Mishra, Mukesh Tiwari, Marathi stars Siddharth Jadhav, and Tiku Talsania playing key roles.

Deepika Padukone was initially considered for one of the leads before Jacqueline Fernandez and Pooja Hegde were finalised.

Ranveer Singh’s double role in Cirkus is his first since his debut film Band Baaja Baaraat in 2010.

In the end, the Cirkus movie proves to be a mind-numbing misfire that squanders its promising premise and talented cast. Rohit Shetty’s trademark mix of slapstick comedy, action, and colourful visuals feels decidedly jaded and uninspired here. At 2 hours and 20 minutes, the film is an exhausting, unfunny slog that will test the patience of even die-hard Ranveer Singh fans.
