The Hotstar Bengali Movies List

Here is our take on some of the best Bengali movies on Hotstar:

1.    Bela Sheshe

This is a movie that questions the concept of marriage in modern times. It is a family drama, which takes you through a roller coaster of a journey. You will be left teary-eyed at certain points, and in others, smiling. The story starts off with the life of Biswanath, a successful publisher, who has a wife, children, and grandchildren, who suddenly decides to call it quits on his 49-year-old marriage.

However, this decision doesn’t go down well with his children or their spouses. They think it is unfair and selfish to some extent. Biswanath is unwilling to go back on his decision because he thinks that his married life has now come to an end, and he feels that he does not have anything more to offer. How his family now copes with this decision is what comprises the rest of this movie.

2.    Bhooter Bhobishyot

Bhooter Bhobishyot is an immensely popular film that is often talked about even to this date. Also, if you are someone who steers clear of horror movies, then this one’s surely not amongst the scariest ones, so you can surely give it a watch.

The story revolves around the big old mansion-like houses of Kolkata, some of which are disputed. Now, as the city develops and new malls or apartment complexes get built for the upper classes, these mansions are about to be demolished. But inside these mansions, live century-old ghosts, who have made the run-down place their own. They are about to be sent homeless, and without any rehabilitation support either. At its very essence, it is a masala movie, but it will give you enough food for thought about breaking down our cultural past to make space for the new and the shiny.

3.    Haami

In Haami, you come across a beautiful friendship between two very young kids. The two meet in school, and soon develop a warm friendship with one another, even though they come from differing backgrounds. However, due to a particular situation, the two kids’ parents decide that it is time to end their friendship.

The divide between the two suddenly seems visible to everyone in the school, and the Vice Principal decides to intervene and fix things for the two kids. But will they listen to sound advice? Or will they be too adamant and not give in? Watch the movie to know more.

4.    Gumnaami

A masterpiece by the renowned Srijit Mukherjee, Gumnaami is a movie that debates the death of one of India’s most heroic freedom fighters, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. The movie takes its cue from the Mukherjee Commission Hearings that took place between the period of 1999 to 2005, wherein the ways in which the leader may have died were discussed. The three theories that were in the discussion were: did he die in the plane crash? Did he die in Russia? Or did he spend the rest of his life as Baba Gumnaami?

We definitely recommend you watch these movies. In addition, there are many more Bengali movies in Hotstar that you can watch.
