The usefulness of a debit card can be attributed to the fact that you can not only make payments but also fetch hard cash by using it at your nearest ATM. Where is the CSC Code on my debit card?

Firstly, for those uninitiated, the full form of CSC is Card Security Code and it also has other abbreviations such as CVV/CVV2 (Card Verification/Validation Value), CVC (Card Verification Code), CID (Card Identification Number). Different types of cards use varied acronyms wherein Mastercard has the CVV or CSC, VISA cards use CVV2 and so on. Now, the next question is- Where can you find this CSC code on your debit card/ATM card?

This particular security code can be located on the front or the back side of a debit card (it depends on the bank or the credit union). It is a 3 – 4 digit number used for payment verification purposes by the debit card holder. For those owning a VISA, MasterCard, Discover debit or credit cards, the CSC code is usually found on the backside of the card, printed toward the right side of the signature strip. This code also acts a layer of security for using your debit card to make online payments. You will not be able to make an online transaction without this CSC code. Therefore, this code is highly important and confidential.

Importance of CSC Code in a Debit Card

Making online payments using a debit/credit card can pose a host of issues such as theft, fraudulent or unauthorized transactions. The bank or card issuing company creates this CSC code enabling complete security against these kind of transactions. All you need to do is enter the CSC/CVV code when making an online transaction using your debit card. Once you enter the CSC code, you will receive an OTP on your registered mobile number. This is the second layer of security wherein your payment will not be completed without entering the OTP received on your number.

While the CSC code may not be required for in-person purchases, its necessity while making online payments is huge and helps you to do secure purchases from the comfort of your home.

Difference between CSC code and ATM PIN

While we have explained the importance of a CSC/CVV code on your debit card, some of you, may tend to confuse it with the PIN number. So, to provide further clarity, the CSC code and the PIN number of your card are two separate things. For instance, if you visit your nearest ATM to withdraw cash, check balance etc., you need not provide your CSC number. In such cases, your card’s PIN number will be required to initiate the transaction. Also, you can auto-generate the PIN number, but the CSC/CVV cannot be auto-generated. The PIN is a 4-6 digit number that is required to make payment from your bank account. You need to enter the PIN number when withdrawing cash from an ATM or to check balance, deposit cash in the machine. It is highly confidential, and you must ensure that you do not share either of the 2 codes (CSC or your PIN number) with anyone.

So, while the debit card number is printed on a Debit Card and visible to anyone viewing your debit card, the PIN (Personal Identification Number) is not printed anywhere on the card. It is advisable to not write it anywhere on the card to avoid money fraud practices. Also, you can change the PIN anytime you desire, but that cannot happen in the case of the CSC code which comes printed on your card.

Conclusion

The CSC or CVV code mentioned on your debit card acts as a safety net against scamsters and fraudulent practices, protecting your hard-earned money and enabling easy online transactions.
