What is Fixed Line and How it Works – Airtel

As the internet has grown in size over the last few decades, so has the usability of internet and how we access it. The latest version of internet that we all use is known as fiber optic internet, but this is a term that falls under fixed line, if you go for a broader classification. So, that brings us to the question – what is a fixed line and how does fixed line internet work?

Here’s all about fixed line internet and how it works to provide internet to your devices.

What is Fixed Line Connection?

As a general term, fixed line basically means a line of cable that provides you with a connectivity solution. It does not matter what type of cable you use. If it is a fixed cable connection, then it is a fixed line connection.

However, there are three main types of fixed line connections that have been traditionally used:

  • Fiber to the premises (which is also known as FTTP)
  • Fiber to the cabinet (which is also known as FTTC)
  • Full copper (which is known as ADSL)

Let us look at these different types of fixed line connections with a bit more detail.

Fiber to the Premises (FTTP)

This kind of fixed line internet makes the use of a fiber optic cable that runs directly from the nearest telephone or ISP exchange to your premises. This is easily one of the fastest versions of internet connections and the setup is also quite easy.

Fiber to the Cabinet (FTTC)

In this form of fixed line internet, the cable runs from the nearest internet service provider’s supply exchange to the green street cabinet of your area, which then connects your premises with the help of a copper wire.

Full Copper Line (ADSL)

In this type, a copper wire provides you the internet connection at home. A copper cable runs from the exchange to your green cabinet and then to your home. This is one of the slowest forms of internet connectivity and may not be ideal for all.

How does the Fixed Line work?

In the beginning, fixed line networks only handled phone calls. These calls used a system called circuit switching, where individual phone lines were physically connected to complete a call. Back then, operators would manually connect lines, but later this became automated.

Over time, as technology advanced and data transmission became more important, landlines went digital and evolved into a single network that can handle all sorts of communication, not just voice calls. This ‘universal, integrated services network’ allows for data, voice, and other services to travel on the same infrastructure, with the help of a fixed line.

A fixed-line network consists of two main parts: the core network and the access network. The access network uses copper wires to connect individual users to the network. This network has nearly complete coverage.

In contrast, the core network connects switching computers with high-bandwidth lines. These lines can be made of copper cables, fiber optics, or even wireless radio technologies.

Modern access networks are increasingly using fiber optics alongside copper wires. If you have a broadband connection that is still using a copper wire connection, then you should move to a completely different service provider, one that makes use of fiber optic connections.
