Update/Correct PAN Card Details Online

PAN, or Personal Account Number, is a 10-digit unique number issued to an individual by the Income Tax department. We all know how important PAN card is, not just as a valid identity proof but also as an identifier which plays a crucial role in paying taxes, opening and operating bank accounts etc.

To err is human. While the authorities are always trying to issue accurate documents, occasionally there are mistakes. This might include an incorrect spelling of your name, faulty date of birth or wrong address. In such a scenario, you have the option to update PAN card details online.

How to do PAN card correction online?

  • Visit the website of Protean eGov Technologies Ltd or click on this link: https://www.tin-nsdl.com/
  • Go to the ‘Services’ section and click on ‘PAN’
  • Find the ‘Change/correction in PAN data’ option and click ‘Apply’
  • You’ll see a dropdown consisting of various types of applications. Click on ‘Changes or corrections in existing PAN data/reprint of PAN card (no changes in existing PAN data)’
  • Next, from the category dropdown, select which category the assessee belong to. For example, if you are an individual and not an organization, then select ‘Individual’
  • Enter your personal details such as your full name, contact details, date of birth etc.
  • Complete submitting the form after entering the captcha
  • You’ll receive a token number via e-mail. Continue from there.
  • You will be redirected to a form. Please fill all the details accurately.
  • Please select ‘Submit scanned images through e-sign on NSDL e-gov’
  • On the next page, you have an option to update your address.

Upload relevant supporting documents

  • After updating the address (if necessary), you will need to upload all relevant documents (check https://www.tin-nsdl.com/ to find out which documents are accepted as proof of identity, address, and PAN)
  • You will then be taken to the payment page. Various modes of payment such as demand draft, credit card, debit card and net banking are supported
  • Upon making the payment, an acknowledgement slip will be generated. Take a printout of the same
  • Attach two photographs with the slip and sign across the photographs. This will need to be sent to the office along with your documents
  • Put all your documents and the slip in an envelope. Write “Application for PAN change- your acknowledgement number’ on top of it
  • Now you can mail your application.

If your name is spelt wrongly in the PAN card,  you should change it. We have summed up the online and offline process here.

For the online process:

  • An application must be made on https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/pan/changerequest.html
  • Fill your details. You can make the payment online.
  • Note down the 15-digit acknowledgement number for tracking the application status.
  • The PAN card is sent to the given address.

What documents are required for PAN card correction?

While making an application for correction in PAN card, one needs to provide identity proof, residential address proof and age proof. A host of documents are accepted. Below is a list of items that can be projected in each category.

  • ID proof: Aadhar card, Voter ID card, driving license, passport, ration card (with photo), photo identity card issued by Central Government, State Government or public sector undertaking, Pensioner card (with photo), Central Govt health service scheme card/ ex-servicemen contributory health scheme photo card.
  • Address proof: Aadhar card, voter ID card, driving license, passport, post office passbook, domicile certificate as issued by the Government, passport of spouse, property registration documents, property tax assessment order (latest).
  • Age proof: Aadhar card, voter ID card, passport, driving license, matriculation certificate/mark sheet, birth certificate, photo identity card issued by Central Government, State Government or public sector undertaking, Pensioner card (with photo), Central Govt health service scheme card/ ex-servicemen contributory health scheme photo card, marriage certificate, an affidavit sworn before a magistrate mentioning date of birth.
