Genre and synopsis

Dunki is a Hindi-language comedy-drama film about the illegal immigration tactic known as donkey flight.

Storyline

An old Manu Randhawa escapes from a hospital in London and meets immigration lawyer Puru Patel. Puru introduces her to her ex-lover Hardayal ‘Hardy Singh Dhillon in Laltu, Punjab. Hardy is overjoyed to get her call after 25 years. She begs him to meet her in Dubai so that he may transport her back to India via the Dunki route, as she is unable to obtain an Indian visa.

Going to flashback, Manu and her friends reside in Laltu and want to move to London for a better life. Poor and illiterate, they are unable to obtain a visa until Hardy, a former soldier, comes in their community. Manu’s brother Mahinder saved his life in war but died in an accident, putting Manu and her family in financial difficulties. In exchange for her brother’s compassion, Hardy vows to assist Manu in getting to London. After discovering that passing the IELTS exam makes it simpler to obtain a UK student visa, they enrol in a coaching session conducted by Geetu Gulati, where they meet Sukhi Singh. Sukhi wants to go to London to help his ex-girlfriend, Jassi. She was married off to an NRI man who physically abused her. Balli passes the examinations, but the rest fail.

When Sukhi arrives in London, Balli informs him that Jassi has died by suicide, prompting Sukhi to commit suicide. Delving by his loss, Hardy decides to take Manu to London via the Dunki route. After a perilous voyage through Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, and Turkey, during which three of their colleagues are slain, they arrive in London and encounter Balli, who is working as a living statue. They discover that Balli had lied to them about making it big in the UK; in reality, he is impoverished and lives with other illegal immigrants.

In the present, Manu informs Hardy that she wants to return home because she is dying of a brain tumor. They attempt to flee to India in cargo containers, mislead immigration authorities into believing they are Indian citizens traveling illegally to London, and take the identities of the companions who died along their journey; as a result, they are deported to India. When Manu arrives in Laltu, she is startled to realise that Hardy never married her for love. She dies of her illness just moments after he proposes. He delivers her the engagement ring and hugs her, heartbroken.
