What is Safe Mode in mobile and how to enable it?

A smartphone is a device that simplifies your online hassles and also enables ease of calling, messaging and so on. While these devices help make your lives easier, they can also be prone to crashing, stuttering and more. Imagine this – you are making a payment to your local grocery vendor with an online payment app and the phone crashes. Now you don’t know whether the transaction is completed, when your smartphone will come back to life and if you need to visit a service centre. Overall, a very awkward scenario. To avoid something like this, you can try diagnosing the issue by activating the Safe Mode on your phone.

What is Safe Mode?

Safe Mode is an extremely useful feature which comes in handy when your smartphone starts faltering. A quick, practical, and effective way to troubleshoot your smartphone, without having to pay for any service charges at a smartphone repairing centre.

Once enabled, your smartphone blocks all the third-party apps that you had installed on your phone previously. Therefore, you get the software experience on your device that you would ideally get if it was just delivered to you from an online store!

if you see that your smartphone is working perfectly fine in Safe Mode, then that means one of the third-party apps is affecting your device’s performance.

But before you check how your device is working in Safe Mode, here are the signs to check if your phone needs troubleshooting:

  1. Your smartphone is rebooting itself
  2. The device is crashing, or the screen gets frozen while you are using it
  3. Your phone has become very slow, and apps are taking plenty of time to launch

If you see any of the above happening to your device, then it is time to put your device in Safe Mode.

How to enable Safe Mode on mobile phone?

Enabling Safe Mode in your smartphone is very easy. In case you have an Android smartphone that runs on Android 6.0 or its later versions, then here is what you must do:

  1. First, you will have to switch your smartphone off.
  2. Now, restart your device. When you see the reboot animation on the device, hold the volume down button.
  3. Your device will now reboot in Safe Mode.

You should remember that when you activate your device in Safe Mode, aeroplane mode gets activated too. Therefore, you will not be able to access GPS, or Wi-Fi or make phone calls with your prepaid or postpaid connection.

Check if the device is working well in Safe Mode

Now that you have enabled Safe Mode, you will have to check if the issues that were troubling your device go away. Follow these steps:

  1. Use your smartphone like you would use it normally.
  2. You will not find third-party apps here, but you can use the stock Android apps. Try opening these apps and see if your device is working perfectly.
  3. Keep an eye on the animation speeds, how much time apps are taking to open, etc.
  4. If all these are working well, then the issue is with a third-party app.

In case that is not the solution, then Safe Mode is not the way out for you. If the phone is heating up, crashing, or lagging a lot, then there might be a hardware or Operating System based issue. Thus, now you might have to get your device checked for additional issues. But if your smartphone works fine on Safe Mode, then now you should exit Safe Mode and see which third-party app is affecting your device.

How to exit Safe Mode on my Android smartphone?

Simply restart your device and you will exit Safe Mode on your device.

How to troubleshoot my phone now?

Once you see that your phone works well in Safe Mode, you will have to check which third-party apps are at fault. For this, you can either choose to uninstall these apps one by one and see whether the issues are fixed. On the other hand, you could also initiate a factory reset on your smartphone. Once the device reboots after the reset, you can proceed to install the apps and games that you usually use. Do keep an eye out for the recurrence of those similar problems after you download these apps.
