You might be well aware that every working individual needs to possess both Aadhaar and PAN cards. The PAN card helps the Income Tax department to keep an eye out for tax evasion practices. And the PAN card helps individuals to file their taxes easily and keep track of their finances. Recently, the Indian government has made it mandatory to link Aadhaar to PAN card.

How to link Aadhaar card with PAN card?
There are two different ways to link Pan with Aadhaar.
- Using the Income Tax e-filing website
- Via SMS service
Link PAN with Aadhaar online
Follow the below steps to link your Aadhaar card with PAN card online.
- Visit the Income Tax e-filing website here.
- Register on the website using your PAN number. It will be your username. Create a password too.
- Now login by using your PAN number as user ID, password, and date of birth.
- If you have not yet linked your Aadhaar and PAN, you will be able to see a pop-up window asking you to link PAN with Aadhaar. Click on it.
- If you don’t see the pop-up right away on the home page, check under the header ‘Quick Links.’ You will see an option called ‘Link Aadhaar.’ Click on it.
- Now, you will need to enter details like your PAN number, Aadhaar number, and name as per Aadhaar. If your Aadhaar card has only year of birth, please tick on the checkbox in the form.
- Click on the other checkbox to validate your details with UIDAI.
- Enter the captcha code accurately. Visually challenged people can use the OTP option.
- Review your details once again and click on ‘Link Aadhar’ button.
If there are no discrepancies, your Aadhaar will be linked to PAN immediately. A pop-up message will inform you about the same.
You can also link the Aadhaar card to your PAN by visiting UTI Infrastructure Technology and Services Limited website or NSDL e-gov website – https://www.utiitsl.com/ and https://www.egov-nsdl.co.in/ .
How to link Aadhaar with PAN card by SMS?
If you can’t link PAN to Aadhaar online, you can also use the SMS service to do the same.
- Type UIDPAN (12-digit Aadhaar number) (10-digit PAN number) in your messaging app.
- Send the message in the same format to 567678 or 56161.
You will get a confirmation via SMS if your Aadhaar is linked to PAN or not. Or you can check the status online on the Income Tax e-Filing website.
Offline method to link Aadhaar with PAN
You can link your Aadhaar with PAN by visiting the physical offices of Protean eGov Technologies Limited. This organization is the official PAN service provider. You will need to fill up a form to link PAN with Aadhaar. Submit the relevant documents with the form to complete the process.
How to check Aadhaar card linked with PAN card?
- Visit https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal and check under the Quick Links header for ‘Link Aadhaar Status.’
- Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number here and click on ‘View Link Aadhaar Status.’
- Your status will show up here.
- You can also use the SMS service to check Aadhaar to PAN linking status. SMS UIDPAN (Aadhaar Number) (PAN number) to 567678 or 56161. If it’s already registered, you will get a message stating that “your Aadhaar is already associated with PAN.”
Note: The link Aadhar to PAN card fee is zero. You don’t need to pay anything to link your Aadhaar with PAN card.
Why link Aadhaar with PAN card?
The benefits of linking Aadhaar with PAN are as follows:
- Reduce tax evasion: Due to proper records, the government can easily identify individuals who are evading tax.
- Less number of defrauds: Many individuals create multiple PAN cards to avoid paying taxes and defraud the government. By linking Aadhaar and PAN, the government will be able to identify the entity of an individual using his/her Aadhaar details and get details of all financial transactions made through the linked PAN. If there are multiple PAN cards associated with the same name, the identification of the fraudster will be easier and faster for necessary corrective steps.

What to do if unable to Link Aadhaar & Pan?
A mismatch of information in your Aadhaar and PAN card may lead to rejection of your linking request. You can make the corrections easily online to fast-track the process.
What to do if card details mismatch in Aadhaar & Pan?
Follow the below steps to make corrections:
- Visit Protean eGov Technologies Limited official website.
- Click on ‘Correction/Change in PAN card.’
- On a new page, click on ‘Apply to Change/Correction in PAN card details’ option. Fill in the relevant details.
- Make the payment and print out the acknowledgement slip. The online payment can be done using multiple modes of payment like BHIM UPI app, cards, net banking, etc. You will have to send this acknowledgement slip by post to Protean eGov Technologies Limited. Don’t forget to add relevant documents with the post. Or choose the digital (paperless) method to upload documents.
If you must make changes in Aadhaar, you will have to visit the nearest Aadhaar Enrolment Centre and fill up the Aadhar Correction Form. You can link your Aadhaar card and PAN card after correction.
