How to kick wifi user

Here’s how to disconnect user or devices from your wifi network

Did you share your wifi password with someone? Uh-oh! Once you’ve given your password to people, they will not only have unlimited access to your wifi, but also will be able to join your network on their devices. This will slow down your connection, resulting in constant lags. But hey, don’t be disappointed! It is possible to remove or boot such people off from your network. And, trust us, it is helpful for a number of reasons. In this blog, you will read how to kick wifi user away from your network. Also, we will help you understand why you should remove people from your wifi connection in detail below:

Buy Airtel Wi-Fi with exciting benefits!

Why kick others off Wifi?

There are a couple of reasons that suggest why you should remove people from your wifi network. These include the following:

  • Results in slow bandwidth and internet
  • Friends or family can download illegal torrents through your network
  • Bandwidth might exceed the Fair Usage Policy (FUP) limits resulting in plan upgrade
  • People have been repeatedly ignoring your requests about not connecting to your network
  • Hackers can be in control of your router and network.

Removing people from your wifi network due to the above reasons is important. But hey, the first thing that you need to do is check who has access to your network.

Listed below are the steps that will enable you to view the number of people using your wifi:

How to see who’s using your wifi?

You can check who’s using your wifi network through your router’s interface with the following steps:

  • Log in to your router
  • Locate the ‘DHCP settings’, ‘ Attached devices’, or anything similar. These specifics vary from one manufacturer to another
  • Check the list of devices connected to your wifi and isolate the ones, not yours. If they are not immediately visible, disconnect or turn off those you know belong to you

If any other device is using your wifi network without permission, you need to know how to remove others from your wifi network with the following methods:

Reset your wifi password to kick Wi-Fi user you don’t know

The easiest, most secure method is changing your wifi password. This will help in forcibly disconnecting all the devices from your wifi network including yours.

If your devices have been disconnected from your network, try and reconnect them by entering the new password on all your devices. Always remember only people with the password will be able to connect to your wifi. Anyone who does not have your new password won’t be able to connect.

Make use of a guest network

A separate access network is termed a guest network. It is used to create a separate wifi network for friends and family whenever they visit. For instance, you can have two networks named‘ Home Base’ and ‘Home Base- Guest.’ The latter can be given to your guests so that they don’t have access to the main network.

Since guest networks are often isolated from the main network, people don’t have access to file shares on your computers or any other network-connected resources. So, enable the ‘isolation’ option or disable ‘allow guests to access local network resources or whatever the similar option is.

Use Media Access Control (MAC) address filtering

Many broadband routers and other wireless access points have an optional feature called MAC address filtering. It is used to improve security by limiting the devices that can join a network.

But hey, the truth is even if you use this method, it’s not entirely secure. Anyone with your wifi passphrase can change their device’s MAC address to match an approved one and take its place on your wifi network. But, if no one does, you will have to manually enter the MAC address when connecting new devices. In case you don’t, an attacker will immediately connect to your network.

Use your router’s page

In order to boot someone off your network from the router page, you’ll need to first find out your router’s address. Then, go to your router’s page and log in by entering your username and password (if necessary).

When you enter the login credentials, find the wireless wifi connections menu and check who has access to your network. If you see an unknown connection on your network, try to block or remove it.

Once you have removed these users, you can perform a net speed test and check if your broadband is back to its best again. To sum up, booting someone off your network is possible on many router configuration pages. However, the process varies from one device to another. For instance, if it is an Airtel broadband router, you can follow the above steps to remove people from your network quite easily!
