Mr. X Movie: The Invisible Avenger Strikes

A mysterious explosion. A man back from the dead, imbued with the power of invisibility. And a quest for justice that takes him into the darkest corners of Mumbai. Mr. X, Vikram Bhatt’s 2015 sci-fi action thriller, introduces a gritty new superhero to the pantheon of Bollywood vigilantes.

Aarav Khanna, a diligent Anti-Terrorist Department officer played by Emraan Hashmi, is caught in a chemical blast orchestrated by the villainous Mikhail (Arunoday Singh). Presumed dead, Aarav wakes up to discover he’s been rendered invisible. Armed with this accidental superpower, he sets out to clear his name and bring the perpetrators to justice, all while evading the pursuit of his ATD colleague and fiancée Simran (Amyra Dastur).

The Invisible Man Formula

Mr. X draws inspiration from H.G. Wells’ classic novel The Invisible Man, transporting the premise to modern-day Mumbai. Director Vikram Bhatt, known for his penchant for thrillers, infuses the film with stylish action sequences and brooding atmospherics that elevate the familiar origin story tropes.

Bhatt makes clever use of Aarav’s invisibility, crafting tense set pieces like an early jailbreak scene where the unseen vigilante wreaks havoc on his shocked enemies. The VFX team brings Aarav’s powers to life with mostly convincing effects, from objects moving on their own to glimpses of his translucent silhouette. A pulsing electronic score by Jeet Ganguly heightens the sci-fi vibe.

However, the script by Shagufta Rafique doesn’t quite transcend superhero clichés. Aarav’s arc hits the expected beats of a hero coming to terms with his newfound abilities and the burden of his mission. Flashbacks to his romance with Simran aim for pathos but end up slowing the narrative momentum. Still, Mr. X movie delivers enough thrills and twists to keep viewers engaged through its brisk 129-minute runtime.

Did You Know?

Emraan Hashmi performed most of his own stunts in Mr. X movie, including the invisibility sequences.

Emraan Hashmi as the Brooding Antihero

Shouldering the film as its invisible protagonist, Emraan Hashmi brings his trademark intensity to the role of Aarav Khanna. It’s a physically demanding performance, with Hashmi often acting opposite invisible co-stars or green screens. He sells Aarav’s anguish and righteous fury, making us invest in this unlikely hero’s journey.

The supporting Mr. X movie cast is more of a mixed bag. Amyra Dastur has a few strong moments as the conflicted Simran, torn between her duty and her feelings for Aarav. But their romantic subplot feels undercooked. Arunoday Singh chews the scenery as the over-the-top villain Mikhail, while Tanmay Bhat provides comic relief as Aarav’s hacker ally Popo.

Action and Angst

Mr. X is at its best when it leans into its high-concept premise and gives Hashmi room to shine as the tormented action hero. A mid-film set piece at a pharmaceutical lab, with the invisible Aarav infiltrating the heavily guarded facility, is a standout. Bhatt stages the sequence with flair, as security guards are tossed around by an unseen force, and Aarav’s see-through silhouette phases in and out of view.

The film does get bogged down in the second half as it delves into the conspiracy behind Aarav’s framing and apparent death. A subplot involving a corporate whistleblower and an experimental performance-enhancing drug feels underdeveloped. And the climactic showdown, while appropriately bombastic, rehashes tropes from countless other superhero face-offs.

Catchy Soundtrack

Mr. X movie songs, composed by Jeet Ganguly and Ankit Tiwari, add some pep to the proceedings. The romantic ballad “Hai Dil Ye Mera” showcases Arijit Singh’s vocals, while the EDM-inflected “Dil Mein Chupa Loonga” reflects Aarav’s angst. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan elevates the somber “Adhuri Kahani” during a pivotal flashback sequence. The soundtrack, while not groundbreaking, complements the film’s moody aesthetic.

A Flawed but Fun Ride

Mr. X may not rewrite the rules of the superhero genre, but it offers a satisfying enough diversion for fans of action thrillers with a sci-fi twist. Vikram Bhatt delivers stylish visuals and taut set pieces, even if the script doesn’t quite match his ambitions. Emraan Hashmi fully commits to his invisible vigilante role, anchoring the film with his brooding charisma.
